The fragile flowers of ROCK!!!!!

The news ain't news -- I can't imagine how anyone's surprised by the study indicating that the music you like says a good bit about your personality. (Captain Obvious gets his groove on. Sheesh.) But the BBC writeup has one perfect quote from Professor Adrian North of Heriot-Watt University:

"The general public has held a stereotype of heavy metal fans being suicidally depressed and of being a danger to themselves and society in general. But they are quite delicate things."

Hear that, ya damn emo kids? Metalheads are SENSITIVE TOO. Just takes less eyeliner the way they do it. The chart at the bottom of the writeup is choice, though I call shenanigans on dance, indie, and the lack of Frank Sinatra. (I'll give youse outgoing, ya bums.)

A little of everything I suppose -- heavier on folk and traditional, American standards, country, singer-songwriter and such, but honestly I like a bit of everything besides opera, smooth jazz, death metal, and some of the more brain-dead subgenres of rap. Even the silly pop stuff can be good if it's done well. Good friend of mine listens to a lot of dance music, so working now on developing at least some affinity for it; I was more into that sort of thing back in the days of FSOL and whatnot, but that's about the time Sinatra and such hit me like a ton of bricks :-) .

And you?

Yeah, that's pretty much all over the map. I suppose I listen to lots of speed metal from the 80s, hard rock from the 70s, Beethoven, Mozart, and have a weakness for singers like Feist and Regina Spektor. Their survey doesn't cover that mix, does it?

I'd like to see it try to cover that! Seriously, though, this is one of those surveys where I'd love to see the actual questions asked. Did they ask people to choose a favorite genre and then do the personality assessment? Did they give folks the chance to name songs rather than self-identifying genre? (Wouldn't it be interesting to see how the Music Genome Project data matches up with theirs?) Answers, dammit, we need answers...
