Embarrassing colleagues -- caught on film!

Must suck some days to be a cop, a good cop, and to know that this badged hammerhead is the image your profession presents to the world. (Extra moron points for apparently not realizing the whole thing was being taped; somewhere in Denver, a donut shop is missing a clerk who jumped to the other side of the counter and grabbed a uniform.) I suppose it doesn't help that the guy bears a certain resemblance to Vic on The Shield...

The planes were flying in formation well before that, though -- remember the Clipper chip, remember the Communications Decency Act, remember UCITA, remember all the reportage required of recipients of government aid...

But yeah. And I don't foresee a whole lot of good news on that front, BTW. The privacy folks I interviewed in the days after 9/11 made a lot of dire predictions about where things were headed; when I re-interviewed them years later, to a man they agreed that they hadn't been pessimistic enough.

So tell us about Canada, Matthew, and how many USonian refugees they're prepared to accept...

Yeah... it definitely started before GWB got elected... it probably got its start when dirty cops who would beat confessions out of suspects became heroes in movies and tv... so at least as far back as "Dirty Harry."

Of course the amping up of the "war on drugs" made things worse, and that goes at least as far back as Reagan.

The Beast who officially took power in 2001 just made it obvious to people who weren't already paranoid.

I just hope whoever takes over in 2008 doesn't turn out to be the damned Smiler.

You know I am not one of those foaming at the mouth conspiracy nuts, but knowing what I know about the concerted effort Bush, Cheney and the various other members of the PNAC put forth to try to start a war with Iraq (starting in the late 90's), I firmly believe that even if there wasn't "a new Pearl Harbor" as one of that group's policy paper from 2000 described such a catastrophic event, the current administration would have still made a huge push for civil liberty-robbing measures and sweeping changes to American life simply based on their sheer criminality over these last two terms.

I know there were building blocks in place before this administration, but I have a hard time believing that the decay of civil liberties in the US could not have been merely the result of a combination of organically grown legislative and judicial decisions... there had to be a more well-thought out plan to rob the American people of those rights.

And now I've read that Amy Goodman, a cameraman and her producer were bloodied up and arrested in St. Paul Minnesota for conspiracy to riot.

Great, beautiful, i wonder if the Libertarians or Greens have some kind of party meeting coming up... make it a trifecta for the police state.

Saw that too, Matthew, and the reports that Mpls/ St Paul cops had been "infiltrating" the various hippie houses etc for some time before the convention and are now conducting rather specific pogroms against same.

Meanwhile -- and in most emphatically related news -- I'm sure you all saw today's report that because Campbell Brown, of all people, asked some rather pointed on-air questions re Ms. Palin's qualifications, Senator McCain got ornery and ditched a planned appearance on Larry King. It's petty, sure, but it indicates to me that a McPalin administration would enthusiastically continue the lie-lie-deny strategy the Bush White House has employed for eight years re the press. It's no-cost, I suppose -- they've got their people howling that the "mainstream media" can't be trusted, and everyone else howling that the "mainstream media" couldn't find milk in a cheese factory, so if they pursue this strategy of refusing to inform the public, the blame goes elsewhere.

Seriously, Matthew, you need any new neighbors up there in Canada?

Well, I will say this... Canada's housing market would surely welcome your investment.
